Sigiriya, the fortruss on the rock
This ancient rock fortress is situated about 170km from Colombo in
the northcentral plains. Sigiriya is easily reach from Colombo by
car, coach or by bus. It is built in the 5th century A.D. by King
Kasyapa following his patricidal to escape from his revngeful
brother. The ruins of his palace can be seen atop this 200m (656ft)
high rock. The rock rises sheerly from the surrounding plain. The
base is ringed by a moat. Halfway up the rock wall there is a long
gallery in the sheer rock face. Here 5th century frescoes of
beautiful women can be seen.
There is a graffiti wall about a 1000 years old with impressions of
the ancient visitors to this magnificient rock fortress. The water
gardens and the couple of enormous stone lion paws are other
attractions.
A beautiful 360 degree view of the surrounding northcentral plain is
a delight to the eye.
