Kandy, the hill country capital This beautiful and charming city lies in the central hill country, about 115km (72 miles) from Colombo. It is easily approached by car, coach or train. The train trip takes about 3 hours and traverses through lush greenery, paddy fields, villages. There are several trains from Colombo to Kandy and back daily. The Inter City Express train is a convenient and comfortable way to travel. The tickets can be booked through Colombo Fort railway station or Kandy railway station. Kandy has got a cooler climate due to its 500 metre elevation. It is surrounded by few mountain ranges. Temperatures are between . The picturesque lake, Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth), the old but charming city are the main attractions of Kandy. The temple of the tooth is one of the most sacred places in the whole country beacause it houses the sacred tooth of Buddha. This unique octagonal temple attracts hundreds of buddhists in homage to the sacred tooth relic day after day. Esala Perahera This can be considered as the most important of all the religious festivities of the island. During July or August daily night time processions with the participation of colourfully decorated elephants and many hundreds of drummers, dancers and torch bearers are held through the city streets. These ceremonies end with a grand night time procession called Maha Perahera the day time procession the next day morning. The Kandy Esala Perahera is surely a most beautiful sight to see. The main centres of the Malwatta and Asgiriya chapters of the Buddhist clergy are situated in Kandy.
